Palimpsest

“Palimpsest” is a 150-piece visual art installation that served as my Visual Arts Major Work for my HSC. This extensive body of work was developed over the course of a year, demonstrating my dedication and artistic growth throughout the process.

The installation is titled “Palimpsest,” a term that refers to a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original text has been scraped off to make room for new writing. This concept beautifully parallels the theme of my work, which explores how familiar elements can transform and evolve over time while retaining traces of their past.

A significant aspect of “Palimpsest” is its connection to my pillow drawings. Each drawing represents the nightly routine where the sleep of the previous day is ‘wiped clean’ and a new imprint is made. This cycle of erasure and renewal mirrors the palimpsest process, highlighting the continuous evolution of our experiences and memories.

Included in the installation is a short animation that visually demonstrates the profound differences and morphing within the body of work. Despite these changes, the rectangular and primary shape of the pillow remains constant. This animation further assists in conveying the theme of transformation while maintaining a core essence, reinforcing the layered nature of existence.

Through this installation, I aimed to convey the layered nature of existence, where each day leaves behind subtle traces that shape our present and future. The intricate and dynamic pieces invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences of change and continuity, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the ever-evolving tapestry of life.
